Clarence M. Powell

Clarence M. Powell made extraordinarily intricate dioramas depicting historical scenes such as the Battle of Gettysburg and Biblical scenes like the Expulsion and the Visitation. After years of travel, Powell settled in DeSoto, Wisconsin, where he constructed his own “Temple of Art.” The themes of the artist’s dioramas as well as their organization into a museum- or temple-like environment, reference medieval traditions such as religious didacticism and pilgrimage. This site no longer exists, but the entire collection of dioramas is part of the Arts Center’s permanent collection.
