Artists often paint, draw, sculpt and create works of art to tell stories. These stories might be about places, people, or animals. They may show you something that happened long ago, or something that could still take place in the future. Some stories are pretend, while others really did happen. The stories, proverbs, riddles, and songs that are shared amongst people and families in a given region or culture are called folklore. Folklore can offer valuable clues about the history of a place.

Several artists in this exhibition immigrated to the United States, bringing with them memories and traditions from their homelands. Artist Charles Smith has been on the battlefield for many years, never shying away from conflict, averting his gaze from trouble, or taking the path of least resistance. His battles have been aimed at exposing the harsh realities of racism. The art environment he began in 1985 in Aurora, Illinois, “The African American Heritage Museum & Black Veterans Archive”, has been the primary front of his soldiering.
