Milwaukee’s Next Act Theatre company presents the moving drama, Faith Healer by noted Irish plywright Brian Friel, in the Arts Center’s second Summer Theatre 2008 offering. Dissolute, charismatic Frank—The Fantastic Francis Hardy, Faith Healer—for years has trudged the back roads of Scotland and Wales, peddling miracles. Accompanied by Grace, his long-time lover, and Teddy, their show-biz manager, Hardy returns home to Ireland in the hope of restoring his genuine but elusive power to heal. Grace, Teddy and Frank each tell their collective story, weaving a haunting and magnificent tale of mystery, devotion, and the power of belief.

Faith Healer is a brilliant, haunting portrait of a 20-year journey, of three lonely travelers driven by an awesome gift. The tale unfolds through a landscape of memory, laden with irony and contradictions. The language is extraordinary. The voices are profoundly personal. Yet by its end, the tale transcends the tellers, casting a stark and soulful gaze on human frailty before the fire of genius.
