Merrill Mason
Well–known for her spare yet sensuous works of fiber and mixed media,
New Jersey artist Merrill Mason studied at Yale University and received
her M.F.A. at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work
employs materials that richly evoke personal narratives, from linen and
human hair to perfume and books. Mason worked in metal for the first
time when she was an Arts/Industry resident at the Kohler Co. Foundry
in 1996. She produced a series of cast–iron lace collars during her
stay, which have the elegance of lace but are colored by the darker
associations of iron: immutable and confining. This body of work served
as the point of departure for the design of her Arts Center washroom, Emptying and Filling.
