Jens Gussek uses mountains, boats, tents, and flags as symbols that reference aspects of his personal history, especially his childhood in the former Eastern bloc of Germany. Mountains of Destiny, works realized in the Arts Center’s Arts/Industry Residency Program, are large slip-cast ceramic images of prominent Alpine peaks such as the Matterhorn. This selection of Gussek’s art represents only a small fraction of the body of work he created while in residence. Jens is currently assistant professor for glass art and painting at the University of Art and Design in Halle (Germany). His work has been featured in exhibitions throughout Europe and the U.S.
