Renée Lotenero, Mallorca Installation, mixed media tile and photographs.

Renée Lotenero (CA) creates fanciful structures, delicate drawings, and mixed-media collages that reference architectural ruins. Her primary materials˜handmade ceramic tiles and cut photographs˜are combined with steel, wood, paper, cardboard, found objects, and paint. The intricate tile designs are based on patterns Lotenero discovered and collected while traveling through Spain. She has recreated hundreds of tiles in various sizes, incorporating them into sculptures and drawings of sprawling structures, large and small.

The tiles and other found materials form a dizzying array of textures, shapes, and colors that seem to exist in a state of flux. Interested in contrasts, Lotenero investigates opposing ideas of deconstruction and construction, masculine and feminine, hard-edged and soft in works of art that appear to simultaneously rise-up and collapse.
