NUMBER OF SUBMISSIONS PER SCHOOL

Every school, regardless of size, is allowed to submit nine works of art. Schools where more than 300 students are enrolled in art classes are allowed to submit one additional piece for every 30 art students above 300. Each submission must be original, i.e., made entirely by the student, not a copy or a print, and must have been created in the 2018–2019 school year.

The Youth Art Month Committee reserves the right to omit works because of a lack of space, fragile condition, or other factors.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Inclusion of the theme of the exhibition series Mise-en-Scène is strongly encouraged. Two- and three-dimensional works may be submitted. The art educator should ensure that all submitted works of art be ready to hang or otherwise displayed. Two-dimensional works should be mounted for presentation on tagboard or mat board with a border not exceeding three inches. Please mount securely to the board for presentation (no staples or tape, please). Please specify the top on each two-dimensional piece. All works in charcoal, pastels, or similar media should be sprayed with fixative prior to submission.

All three-dimensional works designed to hang (masks, for example) should have a hanging mechanism attached. Other three-dimensional works need not have bases; they will be shown on pedestals or shelves. No works with glitter please. Extra-large works must be preapproved.

Works submitted for this exhibition will be handled with the utmost care, but they cannot be insured by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center.

It is recommended that works have descriptive names, rather than “Untitled.” The works must be mounted on tagboard as described in the Submission Guidelines and must be included on the Label Information Sheet.

All artists will receive certificates of participation at the opening. Certificates for those not in attendance will be given to the teachers when the artwork is picked up at the close of the exhibition.

Unclaimed entries will become the sole property of the Arts Center on Saturday, April 6, and will be considered unrestricted gifts. They may be retained, sold, or disposed of at the Arts Center’s discretion. Please pick up all works of art so that they can be treasured by the students and their families!

LABEL INFORMATION SHEETS

Each teacher submitting artworks must complete the enclosed Label Information Sheet by the deadline. Use the fillable PDF and type the labels—handwriting is often difficult to decipher. It is recommended that works have descriptive names, rather than “Untitled.”

Fill out one label for each work of art.

Print FOUR copies of the completed labels to be used for the following:

1. Cut and attach the corresponding label on the back of each work of art.

2. Turn in sheet(s) of completed labels with your labeled works of art during the scheduled delivery times—these are used for the gallery labels and student certificates. Rather than printing, you can email these to jbalge@jmkac.org by putting [School Name] YAM Labels in the email subject line.

3. Attach another set of the completed labels to the outside of the protective carrying container or portfolio.

4. Keep the last set of completed labels for your records.

The Label Information Sheet will be used to generate wall labels for all pieces in the show. Please be accurate and complete, including the art teacher’s full name and students’ grades. Please type this information. We regret that information arriving late cannot be included in the exhibition.
