The John Michael Kohler Arts Center seeks a highly motivated Community Arts Program Director to join the Public Programs team. The Community Arts Program Director oversees Community Arts programming initiatives, commissions, exhibitions, and outreach including serving as the primary connector with the Arts Center’s Community Partners. The ideal candidate is responsible for the proposal, planning, facilitation, and evaluation of Community Arts programming, including Connecting Communities, the Culinary Art Car, and Public Art initiatives and maintenance including The Sheboygan Project and Art in Public Spaces. This position also serves as a liaison to diverse communities of Sheboygan and proposes and develops mission-centered engagement strategies to foster goodwill and support in the community. Further work includes supporting exhibition-related programming, such as activations, residencies, artist talks, workshops and more to connect audiences with exhibitions and the Arts Center.
- Create innovative Community Arts programming, commissions, exhibitions, performances, and other creative outcomes. Through ideation, implementation, and evaluation, this position works closely with Public Programs and Exhibitions to create opportunities that “generate a creative exchange between artists and the public” including taking lead on the following initiatives:
- Connecting Communities: Provide curatorial and project direction for all Connecting Communities projects, including facilitating ideation, logistical, and implementation along with developing financial, conceptual, and logistical frameworks for current projects and curating future projects based on strategic initiatives. Additionally, responsible for budget/projection, contracts, communication with artists and stakeholders, marketing, grant reporting, and evaluation.
- Culinary Art Car (CAC): Oversee ideation, implementation, and summative evaluation of programming aligned with the CAC and its goals and objectives; oversee the maintenance and overhaul work for the CAC including securing proper licensure and insurance; training others on the use of CAC; scheduling use of CAC; responsible for budget, promoting CAC in community.
- Public Art including The Sheboygan Project and Art in Public Spaces: Serve as primary liaison and help articulate needs and maintenance of Public Art projects initiated by the Arts Center.
- Serve as primary liaison with the Arts Center’s Community Partners and strengthen relationships with organizations and individuals through regular Community Partner meetings, open houses, workshops, etc.
- Work collaboratively with Arts Center Staff on community commissions and exhibitions including Connecting Communities, Community Gallery, and exhibition related programming.
- Supervise the Community Arts Program Assistant as well as fellows, interns, and volunteers. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, training staff, interns, volunteers, and/or independent contractors; planning, assigning, and directing their work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- Work holistically with Arts Center staff to strategize implementation of projects that take advantage of internal as well as external resources.
- Be a resource and working team member collaboratively advising the development of Public Programs strategic initiatives.
- Work with Development department in writing funding and grant proposals, implementing evaluation and documentation tools for grant reporting, securing in-kind donations as needed.
- Work with Marketing department in developing marketing plans and creating copy for marketing and interpretive materials per prescribed style and format; connect with audiences including touring and speaking on behalf of the Arts Center.
- Be actively involved in local, state, and national professional community arts associations that will enrich the Arts Center’s community arts program and help create strategic partnerships.
- Handle administrative duties including monitoring budgets and other assigned duties as assigned by the Director of Public Programs based on the needs of the Arts Center.

Education and Experience
- BFA or MFA (preferred) in Art History, Community Arts, Arts Administration, or a closely aligned field
- Minimum of 3-5 years related experience working professionally in Community Arts, Arts Administration, or closely aligned field
