Outreach Coordinator–Community Arts

The John Michael Kohler Arts Center (JMKAC) seeks a highly motivated Outreach Coordinator with a passion for diversity, inclusion, and equity in the arts to support the Community Arts team and Public Programs Department. This position oversees Community Arts outreach initiatives, including stewarding relationships with the Arts Center’s Community Partners. Serving as a liaison to diverse communities of Sheboygan, this role is responsible for proposing and developing mission-centered engagement strategies that enhance the perception of the Arts Center in the community. The Outreach Coordinator identifies and communicates the needs and interests of stakeholders and works closely with the Community Arts Program Coordinator and the Associate Curator of Public Programs to ensure that these needs and interests are reflected in the Arts Center’s public programming. This role additionally lends outreach support as needed to special exhibition-related programming such as activations, residencies, artist talks, and workshops to connect audiences with exhibition content.

Major Responsibilities

  • Digital Engagement: Develop digital communication platforms for engaging Community Partners in upcoming Community Arts programming; develop program-specific social media content and imagery; generate copy for Community Arts web pages; catalog digital imagery and video for promotional use. 
  • General Outreach: Identify and recruit participants for various Community Arts initiatives, including Connecting Communities, the Culinary Art Car, and special exhibition-related programming such as activations, residencies, artist talks, and workshops; maintain a thorough understanding of artistic projects generated through various Public Programs as well as a conceptual understanding of the Arts Center’s exhibition program as a whole; effectively communicate projects and artistic concepts to public audiences, City of Sheboygan administrators, and Community Partners. Work with Marketing team to develop program-specific flyers and brochures promoting participation and engagement.
  • Targeted Outreach: Perform targeted outreach to regional cultural groups, including Latinx, Hmong, and Native American communities; regularly engage with area organizations serving these communities to best understand current needs, challenges, and interests; develop culturally competent communication strategies and oversee a suite of department-wide bilingual content and programming; organize and facilitate focus groups where needed.
  • Data Tracking and Evaluation: Track quantitative data such as program attendance, audience demographics, geographic reach, and qualitative data related to audience experiences for use in grant applications, program development, and program assessments; identify relevant programming opportunities, regularly report on stakeholder issues, and make recommendations for how Public Programs can respond to evolving community interests through its programmatic initiatives; conduct Equity and Diversity Impact Assessments (EDIA).
  • Community Partners: Serve as a liaison for the Arts Center’s Community Partners and strengthen relationships, support Community Arts Program Coordinator in organizing regular meetings, open houses, workshops, etc.

Supporting Responsibilities

  • Supervise and recruit interns and volunteers
  • Facilitate projects and alignment with goals and objectives, manage artists’ logistics and expectations, recruit participants, and promote connecting with audiences
  • Clearly communicate with Arts Center staff, artists, organizations, and community connectors
  • Write interpretive materials and copy to prescribed style and format
  • Implement documentation and evaluation methods
  • Assist marketing in development of promotional plans for programs
  • Aid development staff in seeking funds, grant writing, and reporting
  • Facilitate tours and speaking on behalf of the Arts Center
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor based on the needs of the Arts Center

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in art history, community arts, arts administration, or a closely aligned field
  • Minimum of 2-3 years’ experience working in arts-specific community engagement
