John Cleater
Arts/Industry: Foundry, 2007
John Cleater received his Master’s degree in Architecture from Columbia University in New York City. He is one of the founding members of the multi-media performance group, The Builders Association, whose mission is to create original productions based on stories from contemporary life. Cleater worked for Asymptote Architecture for many years in New York City, where he coordinated projects for clients including NYSE, Documenta XI, Venice Biennale 2000, Eyebeam, The Guggenheim, and others. Most recently Cleater has been developing augmented reality installations that can be viewed on smartphones.
Cleater describes his work as a combination of architecture, art, and technology and his projects have been on exhibit in Grand Central Station, Artist Space, and Museo de Pesce, all located in New York City.
While in residence in the Kohler Co. Foundry, Cleater created large architecturally inspired sculptural components in cast iron. Since his Arts/Industry residency, he has been re-imagining this cast sculpture series, Appendages, into artist housing/studios in Texas, a media pavilion for Art OMI, a Theater complex in Rwanda, and his own studio in Columbia County, NY.
