Miranda Howe grew up in southern New Mexico where she has come full circle, returning there and establishing her studio within the Roswell community. She comes from a family of artists and has always been nurtured and encouraged in her own artistic endeavors.

Her undergraduate work was done in Lubbock, Texas, where she received her BFA in studio ceramics in 1995 from Texas Tech University. Ceramics was the foundation of her education, but she extensively explored many other areas of the visual arts. Finding a new fascination in printmaking, combined with a love of travel, she enrolled in a study abroad program through the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts, based in Italy and Greece. She later began her graduate work at Montana State University in printmaking, but returned to ceramics as her main emphasis of study, graduating with her MFA in 2001.

Miranda has been accepted into art residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, where she was awarded the Lilian Fellowship; the LH Project in Joseph, Oregon; the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado; and the Roswell Artist-in-Residence Program in New Mexico.

Miranda’s travels, geologic interests, and the graphic nature of printmaking continue to influence both her functional and sculptural ceramic work. Within the surfaces of her utilitarian forms, what began as a simple love for patterning with layers of stripes, lines, and dots has evolved into a deeper study, often reminiscent of her native desert landscape. Her sculptural pieces are rooted in a deep love for geology, decorative ornamentation, and architectural components. Captivated by the spirit of nature in counterpart with the structures of man, Howe often uses one to complement the other. Ancient ruins, quilting fabric, dried riverbeds, brick streets, wallpaper, and strata are but of few of the inspirations found in her work.
