Robert F. Lyon

Robert F. Lyon makes sculpture from wood and clay. He has received several awards and grants, including a National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artists Fellowship in sculpture, a Southeastern Artists Fellowship from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and in 2013 he was named an Individual Artist Fellow in Craft by the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Lyon’s work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries. He has been an artist-in-residence at the International Turning Exchange sponsored by the Wood Turning Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Artpark in Lewiston, New York; Sculpture Space, Inc., in Utica, New York; and The Banff Center for the Arts in Banff, Canada

Lyon was born and raised in Queens, New York. He received a BA degree in studio art and art education from the College of New Jersey, Trenton. He received his MFA degree with a concentration in ceramics and glass from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia. Lyon taught ceramics, glass, and sculpture at the School of Art at Louisiana State University. He then served as professor and chair of the Department of Art at the University of South Carolina. Lyon has retired from teaching and is now a full-time studio artist. He resides and works in South Carolina, along with his wife, painter Ann Hubbard.
