Toril Redalen is a renowned ceramic artist from Todalen, Norway. Her work posits the process of exploring the ceramics studio and exhibition spaces as an intuitive way to create her art. Though informed by tradition, her ceramics are experimental and spatial in nature and cover the gamut of what ceramics can be – from raw material to cinematic installations.

Toril grew up on a farm in a small village on the West-Coast of Norway. Her father is a furniture maker and her mother a chef. Their extra long kitchen table became a space where imagination was born. “I remember the meals served on the opposite side of ‘various-ongoing-projects’. My dad still thinks tidying up when you are ‘in the middle of something’ is interfering with the birth of good ideas!” Such influence embedded in the family inspired Toril and her two sisters to pursue creative fields.

Toril received her MA from Bergen National Academy of the Arts in Norway. She has received the National research/work Stipend for emerging artists 2009-10, and was invited to an artist in residence at Porsgrunn Porcelain Factory, Norway in 2009. Toril was also selected to The Norwegian Association of Arts and Crafts’ Annual Exhibition at The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo, 2010.
