Two Sessions Available:
Saturday, May 18, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (Bilingual)
Saturday, May 25, 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
Workshop participants will spend their time working with Los Angeles-based artist Beatriz Cortez learning firsthand about ancient indigenous forms of construction in relation to her installation The Lakota Porch: A Time Traveler, included in The Autotopographers exhibition. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities in The ARTery working with locally available materials.
We will explore the construction of cairns, or markers with rocks, and we will talk about different methods and technologies for piling rocks, as well as conceptual understandings about permanence and mobility, nomadism and fixed demarcation of territories and structures. In addition, we will talk about ancient concepts of geometry, math, space, and gravity.
