Collection Highlights: Don Baum

Collection Highlights: Don Baum

April 14, 2018 — October 4, 2018

As an influential artist, curator, and director of the Hyde Park Arts Center from 1956 to 1972, Don Baum (1922–2008) had a major impact on the Chicago art scene. Supporting many generations of regional artists through experimental exhibitions and programs, including the major exhibition Don Baum Says: “Chicago Needs Famous Artists” in 1969, Baum believed that Chicago’s art scene was worthy of national attention.

This inaugural Collection Highlights exhibition presents a dozen of Baum’s works of art that feature his signature use of paint-by-number panels repurposed for sculpture and collage. The Arts Center acquired sixty of Baum’s works in 2016 through the generosity of Baum’s son, Charles, and with the support of Kohler Foundation, Inc.
