Virtual Dance Classes

 

 

 

The Arts Center will offer virtual dance classes from October 2020 through January 2021.  

Learn new styles of dance and techniques and invite your friends—from anywhere in the world—to join you. 

There are FREE classes for ALL AGES via Zoom.

JMKAC Virtual Dance Classes October 2020–January 2021

Soft-Shoe Tap
Ages 4–5
Every other Tuesday, 4:00–4:45 p.m. CT
Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 15 

Classes for ages 4–8 will build upon one another and students will attend all sessions, every other Tuesday evening from October through December.

Let's get together and move those feet! Soft-shoe is a relative to rhythm tap but without the need for tap shoes. Learn how to keep the beat to music. We will go through a series of tap exercises standing at the barre/chair and in the center floor. We will also explore an introduction to ballet toward the end of each class. No experience needed. Your little dancer will be "shuffling off to Buffalo" in no time at all.

Contemporary & Lyrical Dance 
Ages 6–8
Every other Tuesday, 5:00–5:45 p.m. CT
Oct. 20, Nov. 3, Nov. 17, Dec. 1, Dec. 15 

Classes for ages 4–8 will build upon one another and students will attend all sessions, every other Tuesday evening from October through December.

Using free-flowing movements, combinations are designed to move you in your personal space. We will work on connecting the mind and body, allowing us to explore expression through our movements. We will work together to create phrases and learn a dance to the lyrics of a song.

Yoga for Dancers 
Ages 9–12
Thurs., Oct. 22, 4:30–5:15 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

This class is for those who want to move and stretch at home. We will go through yoga poses, routines, and stretches that enhance our dance technique. Be ready to wake up the joints, warm up your muscles, and bring full breath into the body. All you need is a space the length and width of a yoga mat, a firm pillow, and a strap (can be a scarf or belt).

Learn Thriller!
Ages 12+
Mon., Oct. 26, 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Decades after its release, Michael Jackson’s song Thriller is still a popular hit at Halloween. We will learn the dance moves seen in the music video. Choreography will be broken down into step-by-step directions. Open to all skill levels.

HIIT Hop 
Ages 18+
Sat., Nov. 7, 10:00–11:00 a.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Enjoy HIIT [high intensity interval training] movements choreographed to your favorite hip-hop beats. Get your heart pumping and learn some new dance moves through HIIT techniques. It’s a new twist on dance cardio. Open to all skill levels.

Waacking 
Ages 12+
Mon., Nov. 16, 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Waacking is a form of street dance created in the LGBT+ clubs of Los Angeles during the 1970s disco era. We will perfect the art of arm movements by focusing on rhythmic beats, posing, and executing your best facial expressions. Open to all skill levels.

Dancing Through the Decades 
Ages 9–12 
Thurs., Nov. 19, 4:30–5:15 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

We will progress through different eras in dance from the 1920s to the 2020s, learning styles of movement corresponding to music from each period.  Movements vary from the Charleston to the hand jive! Wear comfortable sneakers.

The Nutcracker 
Ages 12+
Mon., Dec. 14, 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Enjoy the sounds of Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker in this classical ballet-based workshop. We will perform barre exercises and a short center-floor combination choreographed specifically for songs from this holiday favorite. Open to all skill levels.

Barre Workout
Ages 9–12
Thurs., Dec. 17, 4:30–5:15 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

If you are missing the ballet barre portion of class, this class is for you. No barre necessary! We will cycle through the classic elements of the barre with fast-paced music and physicality. During a small portion of the class, we will use a wall for stability. Move the ottoman, grab your ballet shoes, and you are ready to go.

Family Yoga 
Ages 2+
Sat., Jan. 9, 10:00–11:00 a.m. CT 

Here’s a winter-themed yoga practice the entire family can enjoy. Get moving together, connecting and performing basic poses. Be ready to play! This workshop is geared toward families with children ages 2 through 8; however, all are welcome!

Dance & Musicality
Ages 9–12 
Thurs., Jan. 21, 4:30–5:15 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Join us for a free-flowing improv class. We will explore a range of musical styles—folk, classical, contemporary, and more—to learn how they influence different qualities of movement. At the end, we will each find new music that moves us and piece together the movement of those in the class.

Winter Hula 
Ages 12+
Mon., Jan. 25, 4:00–5:00 p.m. CT 

Classes for ages 9+ will be one-time workshops available monthly.

Escape the winter blues and learn basic hula steps that are unique to this dance form specific to the Pacific. In this workshop, we will learn the traditional dance of the Hawaiian Islands. Hulas are performed to songs or chants known as “meles”. The movements illustrate the lyrics. Open to all skill levels.
