Bill Wright

William Wright, 2022.

I’ve pursued a wide variety of interests during my lifetime, but the ones that have endured the longest are bird watching and woodworking. The great thing about both is that they offer a wide range of areas to explore. In bird watching, you first learn to identify birds by sight by looking for various markings. After that, you can study bird calls, the particular habitats each bird favors, and their unique behavioral attributes. Similarly, woodworking offers many opportunities. Furniture making, intarsia, wood turning, and carving are just a few of the areas, and each of these can be broken down into specialty areas.

I have been fortunate over the past forty-plus years to combine my interest in birds and in woodworking to carve birds. I began with carving hunting decoys. Then, utilizing the knowledge I obtained through bird watching, I was able to carve realistic representations of a wide variety of North American birds.

My interests and skills have evolved over time, and my work now includes birds carved and painted in a variety of styles. I do not know what direction my art will take in the future, but I look forward to the journey.
