Many of the programs and events at JMKAC would not be possible without the help of Friends of Art, the Arts Center’s dedicated volunteer organization.

There are more than 500 active volunteers who generously contribute over 5,000 hours every year to the Arts Center. Volunteers give tours, assist with arts classes and Preschool, help maintain the gardens, prepare and serve food and beverages at Arts Center events, and assist with numerous other tasks throughout the year. We could not do it without our dedicated Friends of Art volunteers!

Current volunteers, please log in to the Volunteer Information Center on Volgistics to update your contact information, check your schedule, and sign up for shifts. For instructions on how to use this online system, please watch this tutorial.

Volunteer Opportunities

WORKSHOP GALLERY AIDE
Volunteers greet and familiarize guests with an art-making project in the galleries, restocking supplies and helping to maintain orderliness in the space. Volunteers provide a welcoming presence for visitors and answer general questions about the Arts Center. No artistic skills required, only excellent customer service skills. Volunteer shiftsare about two hours, with opportunnities available now.

MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS
The Arts Center Midsummer Festival of the Arts will take place the weekend of July 20–21, 2024. More than 150 volunteers are needed to help over the course of the weekend, which brings together approximately 100 artists from across the nation as they sell their wares at this juried art show. Attendees also enjoy music, food trucks, and art making. The festival is a wonderful opportunity for volunteers to serve in a wide range of areas including food and beverage service, greeting artists, and assisting with hands-on workshops. Individual and team-building volunteer opportunities available.

WORKSHOP DOCENTS
The term “docent” is derived from the Latin verb docere, “to teach.” Docent volunteers are dedicated to learning and teaching. They help visitors of all ages to see, understand, and respond to works of art exhibited at the Arts Center in meaningful ways. We are currently recruiting volunteers to assist with art-making workshops for school-aged tour groups. Staff will provide you with the information and tools you need to do your part.

HOSPITALITY and SPECIAL EVENTS
Hospitality volunteers may volunteer to prepare food, serve food, bartend, and greet or host. They work together with other volunteers to support events such as the Winter Social, Midsummer Festival of the Arts, Levitt AMP Sheboygan Music Series, seasonal exhibition celebrations, a wide variety of receptions and special events.

SPARK! PROGRAM
SPARK! gives adults with memory loss and their caregivers a chance to enhance their quality of life through social interaction, mental stimulation, and communication in a safe and comfortable atmosphere. SPARK! offers a variety of engagement-focused activities: gallery tours, dancing, hands-on art making, world-class performances, culinary and musical therapy, and more. The program is led by the Arts Center’s specially trained education staff, with support from volunteers. Participation is free for individual caregivers and participants. SPARK! happens the third Wednesday of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

USHERING
Volunteer ushers provide customer service to patrons attending events at the Arts Center. This includes taking tickets, distributing event programs, and answering general questions. Volunteer ushers receive free admission to the performance but are not guaranteed a seat. Volunteers arrive 45 minutes prior to the performance in most cases for a pre-event meeting and may also assist with concessions during intermission.

ARTS DAY CAMP
In late July/early August, volunteers assist campers ages 7–12 years-old, in making art, staying safe, and having fun. Camp days are busy and jam-packed with mixed media projects, performing arts, and outdoor play time. No experience necessary. Volunteers can sign up for mornings, afternoons, or all day, and can choose their own days.

MARKETING
Assist our Marketing and Development Departments with assembly and distribution of swag bags and marketing materials and assist with surveys and information booths during larger events.

ADMINISTRATIVE
Administrative volunteers help with general clerical tasks such as data entry, filing, and sorting. Volunteers may also assist with processing mailings by folding letters, stuffing envelopes, and sorting for distribution. Administrative volunteers are needed on a sporadic basis and are contacted as needed.

PRESCHOOL ASSISTANTS
Preschool volunteers assist teachers in the three- and four-year-old preschool classrooms, supporting the Arts Center’s unique curriculum which emphasizes critical and creative thinking through regular gallery visits for observation and language building, coupled with hands on learning to promote literacy, math, science, cultural studies, and self-awareness. Shifts are three hours in length and preschool volunteers are asked to commit to at least one shift/week during the school year. Preschool prep assistance is also needed in late August to help organize and ready the preschool classrooms for the upcoming school year.

GARDENING
Volunteers are needed spring, summer, and fall to help maintain the gardens and grounds of the Arts Center and the Art Preserve, and the James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden on the south side of Sheboygan. Under the direction of JMKAC’s lead landscaper, gardening volunteers assist with weeding, mulching, raking, and general beautification of the gardens. Volunteers can work independently or gather as a group and use it as a team-building exercise.
