Workplace: Andrea Lekberg

March 14–March 23 and April 8–May 10, 2024

The field of pastry making shares commonalities with industrial processes found in the Kohler Co. factory: the use of molds to produce multiple objects (like cupcakes or sinks) and working on a line to assemble parts of a whole.

As an alumnus of the Arts/Industry program, Andrea Lekberg is intimately familiar with the ongoings of the factory floor at Kohler Co., and she is well-versed in making sweet treats as owner and operator of The Artist Baker, a bakery located in Morristown, New Jersey.

In Workplace: Andrea Lekberg, workshops and drop-in art making activities led by Lekberg share the processes of mold making and explore the collaboration required for marketable products made in bakeries and factories. Opportunities to make baked goods out of materials such as plaster, papier mâché, fabric, paint, or cardboard—all materials that share some of the properties of clay, iron, dough, or icing—contextualize the labor and creativity associated with industrial and culinary fields.

The objects on view in the gallery will grow over time, as visitors display their fictitious tarts, donuts, Sheboygan hard rolls, cookies, or cakes. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Arts/Industry, you are invited to play, create, and connect with others throughout the year in Workplace.
